“Nearsightedness (myopia) is the most common visual disorder among young people. An excessively long eyeball (Figure) results in the focal point falling in front of the retina. Consequently, distant objects appear indistinct, while nearby objects appear sharp. Myopia is treated using concave glasses lenses or contact lenses and in selected cases can be corrected surgically. Surgery alters optical factors but not the length of the eyeball. Myopia usually begins at elementary school age, and progression usually ends after puberty.
